Looking Back: Justice League-The New Frontier

The good news is that there will be far better movies under the “Justice League” brand. This being the first one left a little bit to be desired. I know that this serves to bridge the Golden and Silver Ages of comics but upon re-watching…I just found myself not enjoying a lot of the characters in this. It felt as if there was a need to make most of the league as unlikable as possible.

What I’d rather focus on is the importance of two elements in this adventure. The first being the importance of perception. In the world we live in now, so many people like to tout how they don’t care what people think about them. But what does that really mean? By definition, perception is a way of interpreting or understanding. Do we as a people not want to understand how the world works around us?  Then again, we may come to find out that answer may be a hard one to accept. A Korean solider had no understanding that the end of the war had come, that a cease-fire was in place. Hal Jordan did…but when he couldn’t stop his adversary with reason, he had to resort to a more permanent solution. How many of us had to step over that line and do things that we may not necessarily be proud of in order to get to the next day? The movie doesn’t do the greatest job of explaining why the public at large (and by extension the government) is not big on the super hero concept. This would have better explained Superman being at odds with both Batman and Wonder Woman. We are aware that the JSA has disbanded, one of it’s primary members Hourman is dead and Batman being labeled as a wanted vigilante. To me Superman doesn’t come across like a government patsy (like he does much later in Frank Miller’s Dark Knight Returns) but someone who is concerned with the perception his kind (being defenders of truth and justice) through Wonder Woman and Batman specifically.

This leads me to the other element I wanted to bring up…representation. Superman has always been a character who represents the best of humanity. So he takes it personally on both ends of  the spectrum when it comes to the aforementioned Dark Knight and Amazonian Princess. Diana allowed a group of women she rescued from rebels in Indochina to exact their own brand of justice. Considering this is Women’s History Month, is Wonder Woman wrong in her principles standing up for women being treated like tools, like animals? When Batman changes his costume to not strike fear into the people he tries to protect and adopt a young sidekick, you again see Superman wanting the best of his allies to come through. To represent something that you don’t have a passion for, that you don’t believe in…the end of the movie was about everyone coming together to represent something that they all believed in, even though some of the ideologies and motivations differed. We can be so divided on things simply because we allow ourselves to be at the mercy of how aspects of the world are presented to us and not find a reason to back up a cause that can bring people together.

Although this wasn’t one of my favorite movies, I can appreciate the message it was trying to get out. Even things like the Flash seeking validation, Martian Manhunter seeking acceptance and King Faraday gaining atonement are all valuable takeaways from this second installment of DC Entertainment.

Up Next…Wonder Woman

Monday Morning Gotham: Lines

This is more of a Monday “Night” Gotham. Reason being, went and saw WWE Royal Rumble last night in San Antonio and didn’t get back till late today. And of course, the winter finale for Gotham. What can I say that hasn’t been said already, or rather what can I feel that all of you out there already have experienced? So instead of going into the episode proper…let’s talk about one of my favorite lines (and I’m sure it’s someone else’s too).

“I will not kill.” – Bruce Wayne                                                                                                    Season 3: Episode 14: The Gentle Art of Making Enemies

Some people look at others and say ‘holier than thou’. Others look and say ‘morally corrupt’. All of us have standards and practices that we try to follow. But regardless where we fall on the morality scale, there are still some universal things that should be understood across the board. But even then, with racial lines, cultural lines and especially religious lines…what’s understood is not always what’s agreed upon. I love that Bruce established his line as he prepares to become the Dark Knight someday. Having one set up in place keeps us from going too far. When a person has no limitations place upon him, sometimes circumstances or just sheer force of will can make someone redefine what their limits are or even if they should have any at all. In my opinion that only makes you reckless. We all should strive to place limiters on our lives to keep us from just doing any and everything without considering how this affects you and the people around you.

Some things you just can’t come back from…you can’t step back over the line. So show love and appreciation for the people you see everyday.

Standing Outside of Time

Just the other day, his heart became heavy

Without understanding the bevy of emotions that would overtake him

As the oceans’ waves carry the tree limb of his arduous decision away

He wishes to stay, he wishes he could say

Yet these words carry an empty power

To influence but never change, to entice but not rearrange

It is far more lonely than just being alone

His moments simulate what he wants to be real

They stimulate how he wishes he could feel

Fleeting, is it not?

Needing, wanting, hoping for a spot, for a shot

Becoming light and weightless, remembering what faith is

And having to stand where time continues to go on

Who is Terry Carter?

Origin Story…no not exactly. My name is Terry Carter and the desire to write once again has led me on this path to better express my thoughts and feelings through the art of words and phrases. When I was a kid, I loved writing poetry…was pretty good at it too. I got into writing short stories and doing breakdowns for my favorite anime at that time Shaman King. Eventually, I got burned out. No matter what I set out to do in life, I always had a love for helping people. Whether I was in choir, leading bible study, or just being a team player working a normal job.

I asked the question, who is Terry Carter because for a considerable amount of time…I honestly didn’t know. I would go to work and get little to no respect no matter how much success I would have. It got to where I would go home and I would look in the mirror and I wouldn’t be able to recognize who was staring back at me. It felt like ‘Terry Carter’ became something I had to be in order to get through every day. I lost sight of what was important to me, on the inside. So, I left my one job and instead got multiple part-time jobs all the while getting back into school. So you would think with all that and now starting a blog, it sounds pretty insane. On the surface maybe, but I wake up now with so much life in my eyes. I’m no longer just angry and upset and having to harness those emotions to forge through the day. The idea of being ‘Terry Carter’ was being that leader who put it all on his back if necessary, who would do what was best for everyone else, the first man up & the last man standing. Well, when you have the nickname of “Captain America” for more than twenty years, those intangibles don’t just vanish. But now, I don’t have the pressure of that always weighing on me. I can be just Terry…which is where the whole idea of this blog and all subsequent writings comes from. I can just be myself and do what I love and what makes me happy.

I hope you come along this journey with me. I will of course be following CW’s The Flash on a weekly bases. There will also be “retrospectives” of animated shows from  the past, personal top ten lists and various writings on other interests in the worlds of sports, entertainment and “nerdom.”

My name is Terry Carter…but you can call me “just Terry!”
